Climate Change

There is unprecedented agreement among climatologists that climate change is happening and it is caused by human activities – see the unequivocal stance of the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change 4th Assessment Report (IPCC AR4) published in November 2007.

Information on the topic changes very fast - from the details of how climate will change and how fast the change will be, to which human activities have the biggest impact. For this reason it is a good idea to keep an eye on websites that are up to date and reputable. Two excellent sites are:

New Scientist Environment Climate Change Report is written in accessible language

Nature Reports Climate Change is an academic journal written for specialists

Climate change is a global issue, but there are several websites that look at more local issues:

The United Kingdom Marine Climate Change Impacts Partnership (MCCIP) brings together scientists, government, its agencies and NGOs to provide co-ordinated advice on climate change impacts around our coast and in our seas. Its most recent report (Jan 2008) shows that marine temperature have been rising in tandem with land temperatures and seven of the 10 warmest years on record have occurred in the last decade.

The South West Climate Change Impacts Partnership (SWCCIP) is a southwest UK oriented body hosted by the Environment Agency

Climate change is not a myth. These are the best myth-busting sites:

New Scientist’s 7 myths of climate change

The Met Office’s Climate Change Myths
