Cornwall Council: how it works
Cornwall Council is the new unitary council set up in 2009 to replace the previous County Council and 6 district/borough councils. Parish councils are unaffected by the reorganisation.
The unitary council is responsible for (not an exhaustive list):
- Education up to school leaving age (it gets a bit complicated after 16 years of age with a mixture of schools and further education colleges) and children's services
- Social services (elderly people, learning disabilities, physical disabilities)
- Highways (apart from the two trunk roads A30 and A38 which are the responsibility of the government's Highways Agency)
- Planning
- Waste collection and disposal
- Fire and Rescue Service
- Housing benefits and affordable housing (in conjunction with registered social landlords)
- Public health and protection (environmental health, licensing, trading standards)
- Port authorities
- Some economic development (in conjunction with other bodies such as the Regional Development Agency)
- Public transport subsidies (in conjunction with bus companies)
- Various other services
