Cornwall Council Elections 4 June 2009

On Thursday 4 June 2009, the first elections for the new Cornwall Council were held. There are 123 divisions across the county. The boundaries are all new, having been drawn by the Boundary Committee for England in 2008. Although, the final consultation was not completed, the government decided to give the go-ahead for the elections on the basis of the draft proposals from the Committee.

These elections are so important for the people of Cornwall. Climate change scientists tell us that drastic action must be taken within the next few years if we are to have any chance of stopping runaway climate change. We believe that action must be taken at all levels:

  • As individuals in our own lives, in our homes, in our choices of transport etc.
  • As communities, getting together to reduce carbon emissions with projects supporting public transport, local food, community energy generation etc. the type of activity that Transition Towns are now involved in.
  • As a nation, with central government passing laws to bring about changes in industry, in society, in the way that we generate power etc.
  • On an international scale, through the European Union and through international treaties.
  • Finally, the bit in between, at local council level, is where we can help to make a difference. The new Cornwall Council will have the power to affect the carbon emissions of this county. With new blood on the council, we believe that we can make a significant difference. If we do not get it right within the first four-year term of the new council, after that, it may be too late.

One Cornwall One Planet supported candidates in various divisions. See Candidates for divisions in which we stood.
